This week on 'The Hal Lindsey Report'

As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day 2011, I am saddened and alarmed by the increasing number of Americans who are anti-God, anti-Christian, and anti-Constitution. Even TIME magazine this week questions whether the U.S. Constitution really matters.

I'm also greatly concerned about whether there are enough dedicated and bold Christians left in America to stand up and fight for the unprecedented freedoms that have been handed down to us by our God-fearing forefathers. Why are there so few defenders willing to proclaim what is right with our nation and our heritage? No man or state is perfect, but what other nation has provided more freedom for more people the world over than the United States of America? What other nation has provided such opportunity for its citizens to pursue their dreams? What other nation is always first to rush to the aid of people in all parts of the globe who have suffered catastrophe? The answer is none.

I firmly believe that if we don't wake up and begin to take our responsibilities as citizens seriously, then soon we may have few liberties left for which to be thankful.

I believe that one of the greatest roadblocks to the ascension of a one-world government thus far has been the United States. And the one American institution that has guaranteed this restraint is our extraordinary Constitution. I believe God had a hand in the development of this document, in part, to inhibit the rise of a global government.

But the battle against the Constitution is in full fury now. As we near the conclusion of the "time of the gentiles," I feel America must decline in global significance. That cannot happen until our Constitution, and thus our individual rights and freedoms, are severely curtailed by our enemies, foreign and domestic.

We are seeing that happen daily in a relentless and determined manner. And I believe that many Americans don't recognize the danger because they don't appreciate the value of that document. And I don't believe we can truly understand and appreciate its value until we know something about the beliefs and philosophies of the men who drafted it. I'm going to examine the thoughts of some of those men this week.

Over the years, a few of you have e-mailed to complain that I'm too political on the program. Some say that I should be loving people into the Kingdom of God (and I don't argue with that), rather than warning our nation about what I see looming on the horizon. A couple have told me that I should be supportive of the leadership in our country and trust God to make them see the errors in their thinking. (Imagine saying that to the ancient prophets! They declared the errors directly to the leaders themselves!) Well, this week, I'll explain to you why I continue to sound the alarm about the dangers inherent in the direction this administration is leading our nation on many moral, cultural, and spiritual issues. And I'll tell you why I think God expects more from Christian citizens than ordinary ones.

Finally, as we celebrate our national independence and individual freedoms this Fourth of July, I want to point out that, as great as those blessings are, there is a freedom that is greater still. That is the freedom from sin and eternal separation from God that Jesus Christ purchased with His death on Calvary. There's no better time to accept the free gift of pardon His sacrifice secured for you. Then you can truly celebrate this year the greatest freedom of them all.

I want to wish all of you a Happy Independence Day, but especially the men and women who serve our nation -- and have served our nation -- in the armed forces and in the ranks of the first-responders across the country and around the world. We owe much of our freedom, our security, and our quality of life to you brave and unselfish fellow citizens. God bless you and keep you. And God bless America!

Why Obama is NOT good for Israel

Last week’s opinion piece in the CJN by Dr. Martin J. Plax, “Why Obama may not be Israel’s enemy,” generated reaction from those who think the U.S. president and U.S. policy may not be serving Israel’s best interests. Dr. Martin Plax implores us not to ignore history but then proceeds to distort the historical record beyond recognition. It saddens me that in his opinion piece “Why Obama may not be Israel’s enemy” (CJN, June 24), my good friend would attempt to defend the record of the most anti-Israel president since George H. Bush.

Plax claims Obama is merely warning Israel to reconsider its “intransigent policies regarding Palestinians” in light of the radical changes in Arab leadership. However, uncritically accepting Obama’s theme of treating Israel as the intransigent party turns history on its head.

Israel reached out to negotiate with Arafat while he was safely in exile in Tunisia. Israel withdrew from the major Arab population centers of the West Bank under the Oslo Accords and then unilaterally withdrew from all of Gaza. (Israel did not “return” Gaza, as Plax formulates, as it was previously under Egyptian control.) The resulting George W. Bush letters to Israel, which formally promised that Israel would not have to abandon its large settlement blocs, were rendered not binding by Obama.

Israel previously offered the Palestinians essentially everything Obama is now parroting as if it were his own initiative, at Camp David and again at Taba and yet again by Prime Minister Olmert, only to be summarily rejected by the Palestinians. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, under Obama’s coercion, explicitly called for a two-state solution and froze settlement construction for 10 months. Yet, despite its relentless pursuit of peace, Israel has never received anything of tangible worth in return for any of its concessions and initiatives. To label Israel as “intransigent“ is blatantly false and defamatory.


Obama’s intifada against Israel started well before the so-called Arab Spring. Plax’s linking of Obama’s Israel policy to the Arab uprisings is chronologically incorrect.

Plax’s comparison of Hamas to Irgun is even more disturbing. Ben-Gurion turned his guns on Irgun to get them to submit their arms to one government rule, something the Palestinian Authority has not done with Hamas. Menachem Begin was democratically elected to the Knesset for more than a quarter century before being elected prime minister. Hamas was elected once and immediately began throwing its political opponents off buildings.

To contrive expectations about Hamas based on Irgun is beyond delusional. Is it impossible for Hamas to reform? No. Is it rational for Israel to take existential risks based on that unrealistic hope? Only Obama and his apologists apparently believe so.

Israel was created by the United Nations and recognized, de jure, by all of Europe, the Americas, the Soviet Union and many others. It did not need de facto recognition. The only significance of the Madrid Conference, which otherwise accomplished absolutely nothing of substance despite forceful pressure from the first President Bush, was that it bestowed de facto recognition on the Palestinians, not on Israel, as Plax states.

Obama’s setting of the 1967 (actually 1949 armistice) lines as the basis for negotiations can hardly be called “neutral,” unless, of course, he had also called for the Palestinians to commit to a demilitarized state and to give up their demand for a “right of return,” which he did not do. Neutrality better describes President Clinton, who, in contradiction to Plax’s depiction, played no role in negotiating the Oslo Accords other than to provide a venue for photo ops. The ensuing treaties with Jordan, India and others were not the result of any pressure or intervention by the president of the United States.
Israel gave up the Sinai in 1956, which led to war in 1967. Israel entered into pacts with Gemayel of Lebanon, Sadat of Egypt, and the shah of Iran, who were all either assassinated or deposed shortly thereafter. Withdrawal from Lebanon resulted in 8,000 rockets and war. Withdrawal from Gaza resulted in 6,000 rockets, which were smuggled in from Egypt, to whom Israel had twice ceded the vast and mineral-rich Sinai peninsula in the pursuit of peace, and then war. And finally, the election of President Obama resulted in the abrogation of U.S. commitments regarding Israeli settlements.

Plax is correct that Israel must learn its history lessons well. Its very existence depends on it.

Chick-fil-A is a great American success story.

It currently employs over
50,000 workers at over 1,500 outlets located all across our
nation. It generates more than $2 billion in income and supports
many charitable institutions.

But the left-wing ideologues in this country hate Chick-fil-A.
They have launched an all-out smear campaign to discredit the
business. Why? Because the restaurant chain’s official corporate
mission is to “glorify God.” Accordingly, the business is owned
and operated by devout Christians who believe in Christian
principles.

To emphasize this, all Chick-fil-A heir stores are
closed on Sunday to enable their workers to spend the day
resting and worshiping the Lord.

The anti-Chick-fil-A leftists sneer at the company’s main product
as “Jesus Chicken.” They make fun of its no-Sunday-work
policy.

They attack its owners and operators as ‘anti-gay.” Even
the New York Times recently attacked the business as “anti-gay.”
These are the same people who have attacked the Boy Scouts of
America relentlessly because of that organization’s commitment
to God and to Christian principles.

The Future of Faith

Drew Dyck explores reasons why young people are leaving Christianity in alarming numbers. The results are sobering – but they need to be faced.

Drew Dyck, the managing editor of Leadership Journal, has written an important book that investigates the exodus of young people from the faith. It’s a topic we ignore at our own peril. In this provocative interview, Drew discusses some of his disturbing findings from Generation Ex-Christian: Why Young Adults are Leaving the Faith…and How to Bring Them Back.

• What prompted you to write about young people who have left the faith?

As I moved through my twenties, I started to see some of my friends leave the faith. These were people who had been active in my youth group, sang on the worship team, and were passionate about Jesus. That got my attention.

So I read up on the topic and learned that what I was witnessing in my circle of friends was not unique. Several recent studies seem to indicate that there’s a strong tendency for this generation to fall away. I also wanted to get behind the statistics to the real-life young people who had walked away. So I tracked down dozens of them, mostly 20-somethings, who identified as “ex-Christians” and listened to their stories. I tried to identify the primary reasons they left. I believe that the factors that lead people away from the faith often serve as barriers that prevent them from returning. And that’s what my book is about, equipping Christians to have meaningful conversations with their loved ones who have strayed from God.

• But don’t young people often leave their childhood faith only to come back when they’re older? Won’t today’s young people come back too?

I would love to believe that there will be an automatic return. Unfortunately there are factors that I believe make this generation different. First, young adults today are dropping religion at a greater rate than young adults of yesteryear—”five to six times the historic rate,” according to prominent social scientists Robert Putnam and David Campbell.

Second, young adulthood is much longer than it used to be. Marriage, career, children—the primary sociological forces that drive adults back to religious commitment—are now delayed until the late 20s, even into the 30s. Returning to the fold after a two- or three-year hiatus is one thing; coming back after more than a decade absence is considerably more unlikely.

Third, I just believe there’s been a tectonic shift in the broader culture. Past generations may have rebelled for a season, but they still inhabited a predominantly Judeo-Christian culture. Going to church was what good people did. But for those reared in pluralistic, post-Christian America, the cultural gravity back to the faith has weakened.

I don’t want to be a doomsayer. I hope the trend reverses. But I also want to guard against complacency. We can’t wait for them to come back. I think we need to pray for them, seek them out and actively engage them in conversations about God.

• What role does moral compromise play? Do some young people leave just to indulge a sinful lifestyle?

It often plays a big role, maybe a bigger role than most “leavers” would care to admit. Living the Christian life is hard, and when you’re falling short, as we all do, it’s easy to forfeit relationship with an invisible deity in order to indulge sinful, real-world desires. But moral compromise doesn’t always tell the whole story.

Many of the leavers I interviewed had genuine intellectual objections. Others had been hurt in the church or by other Christians. Some merely drifted away. It made me realize how crucial it is to listen well. When talking to these people we really have to do some detective work, find out where they are at, and then speak specifically to their concerns.

• We hear a lot about the younger generation being postmodern. Some say they don’t even believe in truth. And yet I’ve found that my Case series—which presents the rational basis for Christianity—has had a strong appeal with 16- to 24-year-olds. Did the people you interviewed seem to care about truth?

Most did care about truth. Some were very postmodern in their thinking and didn’t see any place for rationality or logic when it came to spiritual topics. But they were in the minority. Yes, postmodernism has impacted this generation. And we need to know how to speak to those people. At the same time I think the rumors of modernity’s death have been greatly exaggerated. There are still plenty of young people who care about truth. In fact, one of the things that I found so sad is that many young people, when they aired doubts or asked questions, were either given trite answers or completely shut down. We need to do a better job of making room for questions and providing sensitive intelligent answers to the questions that they have.

• How can Christian parents talk to their grown children who have rejected their faith? What common mistakes do they make?

Parents generally react poorly when their children leave the faith. They often have one of two opposite and equally harmful reactions. Either they stay in denial and fail to address the issue at all–or they go on the offensive, delivering homespun sermons or clobbering their kids with biblical truth. Both reactions are counterproductive.

Another common mistake is fighting “proxy wars.” When the topic of faith gets too contentious, debate gets channeled to other arenas. Parents often end up arguing with their children about lifestyle issues, political views, or morality. Those are important topics, but parents of grown children should avoid getting embroiled in these arguments. They’re bad hills to die on. If they want to see their children return to the faith, they should save their words to talk about the gospel: the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

• Has the church played a role in causing this trend?

I’m afraid we have. Today many youth ministries are practically devoid of any spiritual engagement. Some have been reduced to using violent video game parties to lure students through their church doors on Friday nights. Church researcher Ed Stetzer describes most youth groups as “holding tanks with pizza.” There’s nothing wrong with video games and pizza, but they’re tragic replacements for discipleship and Bible teaching. Many young people have been exposed to a superficial form of Christianity that effectively inoculates them against authentic faith. To stem the tide of young people leaving, I believe churches need to get shift from an entertainment emphasis back to biblical education and spiritual growth, which were the initial goals of the youth ministry movement.

But let’s not let parents off the hook either. They can’t delude themselves into thinking that dropping their kids off once a week for a couple hours is going to make their kids passionate Christians. They can’t leave it for “the professionals.” What happens for a couple hours at church can’t compete with what happens 24/7 inside the home. Parents need to be modeling and teaching a dynamic faith at home. They are the primary faith influencers.

• What surprising things came to light as you interviewed young ex-Christians?

In the interviews, I asked the ex-Christians whether they ever still prayed. It was an absurd question, really, considering how bitterly most of them had rejected God. But most still did pray. They were angry, conflicted prayers, but beautiful in their honesty and desperation: “God, where are you? Can you hear me? Do you exist? Do you even care about me? I miss you.” As a Christian, the prayers were heartening to hear. I believe that there’s a deep-seated longing for God, even for those who deny his existence. I’ve learned to start hearing skepticism as the language of spiritual longing.

Prayer for Freedom - Until We All Go Home

As I came out of the supermarket that sunny day, pushing my cart of groceries towards my car, I saw an old man with the hood of his car up and a lady sitting inside the car, with the door open.

The old man was looking at the engine. I put my groceries away in my car, and continued to watch the old gentleman from about twenty five feet away..

I saw a young man in his early twenties with a grocery bag in his arm walking towards the old man. The old gentleman saw him coming too, and took a few steps towards him.

I saw the old gentleman point to his open hood and say something. The young man put his grocery bag into what looked like a brand new Cadillac Escalade. He then turned back to the old man. I heard him yell at the old gentleman saying:

'You shouldn't even be allowed to drive a car at your age.' And then with a wave of his hand, he got in his car and peeled rubber out of the parking lot.

I saw the old gentleman pull out his handkerchief, and mop his brow as he went back to his car and again looked at the engine.

He then went to his wife and spoke with her; he appeared to tell her it would be okay. I had seen enough, and I approached the old man. He saw me coming and stood straight, and as I got near him I said, 'Looks like you're having a problem.'

He smiled sheepishly, and quietly nodded his head. I looked under the hood myself, and knew that whatever the problem was, it was beyond me. Looking around, I saw a gas station up the road, and I told the old man that I would be right back. I drove to the station and I went inside. I saw three attendants working on cars. I approached one of them, and related the problem the old man had with his car. I offered to pay them if they would follow me back down and help him.

The old man had pushed the heavy car under the shade of a tree and appeared to be comforting his wife When he saw us he straightened up and thanked me for my help. As the mechanics diagnosed the problem (overheated engine), I spoke with the old gentleman.

When I shook hands with him earlier, he had noticed my Marine Corps ring and had commented about it, telling me that he had been a Marine too. I nodded and asked the usual question, 'What outfit did you serve with?'

He had mentioned that he served with the first Marine Division at Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal ....

He had hit all the big ones and retired from the Corps after the war was over. As we talked we heard the car engine come on and saw the mechanics lower the hood. They came over to us as the old man reached for his wallet, but was stopped by me. I told him I would just put the bill on my AAA card.

He still reached for the wallet and handed me a card that I assumed had his name and address on it and I stuck it in my pocket. We all shook hands all around again, and I said my goodbye's to his wife.

I then told the two mechanics that I would follow them back up to the station. Once at the station, I told them that they had interrupted their own jobs to come along with me and help the old man. I said I wanted to pay for the help, but they refused to charge my credit card.

One of them pulled out a card from his pocket, looking exactly like the card the old man had given to me. Both of the men told me then that they were Marine Corps Reserves. Once again we shook hands all around and as I was leaving, one of them told me I should look at the card the old man had given to me. I said I would and drove off.

For some reason I had gone about two blocks, when I pulled over and took the card out of my pocket and looked at it for a long, long time. The name of the old gentleman was on the card in golden leaf and under his name was written: 'Congressional Medal of Honor Society.'

I sat there motionless, looking at the card and reading it over and over. I looked up from the card and smiled to no one but myself and marveled that on this day, four Marines had all come together because one of us needed help. He was an old man all right, but it felt good to have stood next to greatness and courage, and an honor to have been in his presence. Remember, OLD men like him gave you FREEDOM for America . Thanks to those who served and still serve, and to all of those who supported them, and who continue to support them.

America is not at war. The U.S. Military is at war.. America is at the Mall. If you don't stand behind our troops, PLEASE feel free to stand in front of them!

Remember, Freedom isn't Free. Thousands have paid the price, so that you can enjoy what you have today.
